July 2010: my wife (also a teacher) and I drove out to Normandy from Paris. Even though I knew what to expect, I was still shocked and deeply moved. I realized the night after this visit, while having dinner with my wife, that none of the men buried in the memorial never got to marry and grow old with the girls they loved. I still feel extremely lucky to have born WHEN & WHERE I was.
It made me proud of the Americans that stormed those beaches.
I would now love to visit the beaches of Guadalcanal where my grandfather helped take a similar beach in the Pacific.
All of the photos from this trip our on my Flickr account and are for public viewing. I plan to use them with my American history classes and blog about them. Too bad my students aren’t old enough to see “Saving Private Ryan.”
Every American should visit this memorial.
